Hello there! Recently we came back from Mexico City, and I must say it’s been a year since my last visit. A lot of since have dramatically changed for better, and it makes my heart full when I see all the improvements. If you follow my blog, you know that I have so many posts about life, food, culture and all things Mexico. Recently I was asked what I would do if I only had one day in Mexico City and I have to honest with you – it was a tough question to answer since the city is so big and has so much to offer. So, I dedicated Sunday to find the answer.
First things first: SAFETY.
Our place is a little far from the center, so my husband and I had to order an Uber to the underground system called “metro”, and then take another 17 stops to get there. That being said, try to find a hotel/Airbnb close to Condesa if you’re visiting.
While in Mexico City, you wouldn’t see me wearing my wedding ring and flashy jewelry. You would also notice that I use my backpack upfront, move fast and don’t use my professional camera in the city or metro. Robbery is the most common crime in Mexico City; luckily, nothing terrible has ever happened to me, but it’s better to be extra careful than face the consequences.
Ready to explore?
If I had only one day in Mexico City, I would…
Spend time exploring Zócalo (Plaza de la Constitución), and the main attractions located there – Historic center of Mexico City, National Palace, Museo Mural Diego Rivera, and Estanquillo Museum.
Visit Palacio de Bellas Artes
This is my favorite place in Mexico City, and I always try to visit it every time I am in Mexico. The ticket for general admission costs MXN70 and provides access to the MFAH art collections.
Pro tip: after you visit the museum, treat yourself to some coffee or Mexican chocolate with a view in the cafeteria located on the 8th floor of Sears.
Stop by China Town
Located just in from of Palacio de Bellas Artes, it’s a really great place to try some Mexico inspired bao buns and take another China Town off your list.
Rent an electric scooter
I had so much fun riding around Mexico City! All it takes is downloading the app like “Limebike”, and you are good to go. It’s such a great way to explore, make stops, avoid the traffic and enjoy the city!
Eat at the local market
There is no better way to get the taste of Mexico than eating street food from the markets! I am sure the flavors will surprise you.
Eat churros and sip hot chocolate at famous churrería “El Moro”
This is the most famous restaurant that serves fresh churros and mexican hot chocolate in Mexico City. First opened in 1935, it brings locals and tourists together to enjoy the best dessert Mexico has to offer.
Eat tacos at “El Calífa”
It’s one of my favorite places in town: it’s simple and tasteful, with delicious Mexican food for meat lovers and vegetarians. Also, make sure to try “café de olla”.
Finish the day with delicious drinks and dinner at “La Capital”
This place has the best drinks in town, as well as their famous tuna tostadas. The atmosphere is delightful, AND all the waiters speak both English and Spanish 🙂
What’s your favorite thing about Mexico City?
XX,
Gena.

I have never been to Mexico City… I always do the beachy tourist areas in Mexico but there is so much history there and architectural features and I think it looks really neat. I have heard it isnt the safest place to be though so nice to hear that things may be changing.

Well, touristy areas is a great way to start! Let me be honest – it’s still not safest place in the world. But to be fair – it’s like any other really big city You can’t be 100% safe

One of my favorite writer whom I see as my inspiration in so many aspect of life recently went to Mexico all by herself! People keep telling her that she better be careful living in a place all by herself but she adamantly shrug all their worries off and went out of her box. I wish I could be like her or at least copy her bravery, I would love to visit Mexico City!!
